GENERAL INFORMATION
Students must attend the courses and carry out study and research activities on a continuous and regular basis, in compliance with the rules and regulations established by the Faculty (Collegio Docenti).
Every year doctorate students must provide the Faculty (Collegio Docenti) with an account of the research activities carried out during the preceding year.
Ph.D. students must acquire a minimum of CFUs (CFU=University credit unit), during their training. Credits can be collected attending different type of seminars and workshops.
At the end of Ph.D. course, candidates must submit their dissertation thesis to the Collegio dei Docenti, to be admitted to the final examination. The Ph.D. thesis is sent to two high recognized value professors for external evaluation.
Subsequently, the final examination step consists of a public defense of the dissertation, during which the candidates present and discuss the results of their research in front of a board of experts in the subject. The dissertation defense may be carried out in a language other than Italian.
I and II year - Annual Report
At the end of September, the PhD students are requested to submit a report of the research activities performed during the last year divided into the following sections:
summary of the research project – introduction and rationale, objectives, methodology, results, conclusions, future perspective, and bibliography. Maximum length: 4 pages (escluded bibliography and pictures);
list of the attended didactical activities: seminars and courses, whorkshops and conferences;
list of posters and/or oral communications presented by the PhD student;
list of publications;
list of abstracts.
The report must be signed by the student and the tutor and /or the co-tutor.
In the first half of October the students will be invited to make an oral progress report of the project (15 min conversation).

III year - Final examination
To graduate the PhD students MUST have in their CV one scientific work accepted for publication during the PhD period (no reviews or consortium papers will be considered).
At the end of the third year the PhD candidates need to send a report of the project finalized to the PhD coordinator.
The date and time of the final examination is scheduled by the Faculty. In general, two sessions are planned:
- Winter session (end of February/ beginning of March)
- Summer session (mid-July)
3 MONTHS BEFORE the session
PhD students who intend to graduate must invite their tutors to send to the Coordinator the names of the two external reviewers (chosen among researcher and University professors; one of them should be a foreign person).
2 MONTHS before the session
The thesis must be sent out for revision.
WITHIN 30 DAYS BEFORE GRADUATION
The reviewers’ comments (evaluation report) must return to Coordinator and mario.repole@uniupo.it that will send to the exam commission of the final defense.
In case reviewer ask written modification of the thesis this must be done in 2 weeks to allow the student to graduate.
If the requested modification require experiments the student can post-pone the graduation to the next session.
PNRR/PON fellowships PhD informations
For PNRR fellowships PhD: every six months the semestral report must be uploaded on https://dottorati-pnrr.cineca.it/ and validated by the Ph.D. program coordinator (Prof. Antonia Follenzi). Moreover, an annual report must be also submitted at the end of the academic year. The document must be signed by you and then sent by mail (in PDF format) to the PhD program coordinator (Prof. Antonia Follenzi).
For PON fellowships PhD: three reports per year uploaded on https://siri-ponri.cineca.it/Sportello/DOT21/, the deadlines are usually written on your page, so check it once in a while. Once the reports are filled, they must be validated by the PhD program coordinator (Prof. Antonia Follenzi).
