Brief Research Description

The research projects cover a wide range of areas to address significant health challenges related to diet and metabolic diseases. All studies are characterized by in vivo clinical trials and translational laboratory research, both in vitro and in vivo on murine models, also in collaboration with various research centres in Italy and abroad. Omics and microbiota characterizations are done with several UPO and external collaborations. The projects focus on obesity, lipodystrophy, diabetes and neuroendocrine diseases in relation to nutrition. The ongoing projects investigates; i) the role of ketogenic diet in obesity and diabetes in both human and animal models; ii) the role of functional food and food supplements (including probiotics) on gut hormones and in the prevention and management of metabolic diseases; iii) the role of unhealthy diets on diabetes and MASLD; iv) the role of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) and infections on the diabetes phenotype; v) the role of vitamin D in several endocrine diseases; vi) management and characterization of lipodystrophy syndromes through the participation to the international ECLip Registry and several international trials.
