FOOD, HEALTH AND LONGEVITY STUDIES
Educational objectives
The international Ph.D. program was born - starting from the academic year 2019/2020, XXXV cycle - from the fusion of the Excellence projects of the UPO Departments of Medicine: the AGING Project and the Food for Health Project.
The Ph.D. will be interdisciplinary to train skills in “Food” and “Longevity” issues and to strategically converse with multiple disciplines.
Our program focuses on two multidimensional macro-themes and aims to train high-profile professionals who will be able to find work in the health sector (hospital, university, pharmaceutical), but also agri-food and industrial (food, biotechnology), ICT ( big data, device), specific legislation (EFSA, industries) and third sector, including the social sphere, as they will be able to offer basic knowledge to deal with the theme of health, food, longevity, microbiota, regenerative medicine and precision medicine but also biological mechanisms. The basic communication and understanding of the individual scientific and humanistic disciplines will generate managerial professional profiles aimed at complex work scenarios.
The presence of humanities will encourage the integration of the themes of the two curricula in social, ethics and anthropology, promoting innovative and responsible research (responsible research & innovation) as suggested by the Horizon programs.
Location and Facilities
The Novara Medical School, its affiliated hospitals and research institutes are home to research laboratories working in all areas of bioscience and foster a stimulating and supportive environment for research training. Indeed, our environment guarantees expertise that will enable students to achieve their research goals, whether they are interested in biological mechanisms, disease-focused translational studies, or applied research.
Through the numerous core facilities, they will have ready access to the latest, most advanced technologies. Because the Novara area is small and concentrated with biomedical researchers, students will never find them further than a short walk away from leading experts or emerging technology that can boost their research forward.
Academic pathway
The research doctorate courses last three years.
Students must attend the courses and carry out study and research activities on a continuous and regular basis, in compliance with the rules and regulations established by the Faculty (Collegio Docenti).

Job opportunities
The aim of our program is to train high-profile professionals for both the research world and a dynamic working world. PhDs will be able to find jobs in health (hospital, university, pharmaceutical company), but also in agribusiness and industry (food, biotechnology), ICT (big data, devices), specific legislation (EFSA, industries), and the third sector, including the social sphere, as the PhDs will be able to offer basic knowledge to address the topic of health, food, longevity, microbiota, but also related biological mechanisms, which are fundamental for new professional figures. Basic communication and comprehension skills in both scientific and humanistic individual disciplines will generate professional leadership profiles aimed at complex work scenarios.
